Standard for the Montbéliarde Breed

A large breed, with a red and white coat, the white stretching to the lower part of the body and to the extremities (head, limbs and tail), the red is a bold, bright colour, predominating on the upper part of the body. White head, red patches around the eyes and red marks on the jowls are tolerated. Fairly light coloured hooves and mucous membranes. Slender head, wide around the eyes, with a straight profile, wide muzzle, neck clear with small dewlap, well-knit shoulder, wide, deep breast, straight top part with backbone not visible, tail holder not very predominant, long, wide pelvis which is slightly at an angle, deep side, low thigh, vertical limb, wide hams, which are flat and sharp, pasterns slightly at an angle. Udder attached a long way to the front, high and wide at the rear with a well-marked ligament and a horizontal floor, located clearly above the ham, regular teats, which are cylindrical and average sized located in the middle of the quarters and pointing slightly inwards.

The average weight of adult females is around 650 to 800 kg, that of bulls from 1,000 to 1,200 kg. The desired measurements for adult cows (aged 5 years and over) are as follows:

  • height at the sacrum: 145 to 150 cm
  • pelvis length: 55 to 58 cm
  • breast depth: 75 to 78 cm
  • haunch width: 55 to 58 cm
  • side depth: 80 to 85 cm
  • width at the trochanters: 54 to 57 cm
