From the Herd-Book to the Montbeliarde Association

Since its creation in 1889, the Herd-Book has kept the young livestock’s book by recording birth certificates and registering inscriptions for adult animals checked during animal gatherings. The local Unions were the mediators between the farmers and the Herd-Book. Once limited, the geographical area of the Herd-Book was able to spread in 1920 to all places where the Montbeliarde was present. In 1925, the Herd-Book counted 878 animals, including 266 males.

The Montbeliarde UPRA, taking over all the activities of the Herd-Book and the Montbeliard GIE, was created in January, 1997. This association aims to gather all the animals of the breed and serve at best the French and foreign Montbeliarde farmers. It became in the end of 2007 the Organisation for the Selection of the Montbeliarde breed, according to the new legislation.
